Friendship Day

by Francis K Githinji

Friendship Day is a day that is set aside to recapture and celebrate the spirit of friendship.

In 1935, a proclamation was made by the US congress to honor friends and declared that the first Sunday of August would be National Friendship Day. This was received with appreciation by the people and since then, more and more people go out of their way to make this day special for friends. The fame of the day has spread to many nations of the world and, more countries are now recognizing the day and are rising up to celebrate the occasion together with friends, so that the day is now more often referred to as International Friendship Day.

India is one of the many countries that have taken up the tradition of celebrating Friendship Day on the first Sunday of August. People celebrate the national day of friendship in various ways including sending cards or even flowers to each other. Some people organize parties and programs to share the goodness of having friends in life.

National Friendship Day is not just for individuals. Many companies or associations which have had profitable friendships will be on the front line to mark the occasion.

In some countries, Friendship Day is celebrated on a different date so you should try to find out the date on which it is celebrated in your area. If there is no local date, you can celebrate with those who mark it on the first Sunday of August, or with others who put it on the third Sunday of August.

Many people see August month as friendship month. This is mainly because the month contains Friendship Day. Among many other activities on this special day, friends may say friendship poems and send messages to warm the heart. It's also a time to sing songs in honor of friendship. Text messages are also sent, a very efficient and convenient way to pass on some love to friends. Others take advantage of the day to make new friends.

It is a pretty interesting day and you can have lots of fun. At the end of the day, when you have recognized the role that good friends play, you will have done your part. Let the day inspire you to become a friend who is worth being celebrated. If you wish to get more information or ideas about what to do on this day, you can look for good tips on the Internet. See the pictures of friends celebrating and having fun. You will make the day special for your friends from the inspiration.

Friendship Day Poems

by Richard Dupont

On this warm occasion of Friendship Day, It would be great to share some nice Friendship Day poems with your dear friends and companions. If you can write your own poem it would work wonders. Just in case you’re lost for words you can always send one out of the many poems that have been written for friends. Poets have penned down their feelings for friends in the sweetest of words.

Here’s one from H.W. Longfellow, one that brings out the true essence of friendship –

I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.

-H. W. Longfellow

Aren’t friends truly the angels that we meet on earth? That’s what Aizabel Parinas says in this short but cute poem –

I believe in angels,
The kind that heaven sends,
I am surrounded by angels,
But I call them friends.

-Aizabel Parinas

It’s sad how often we forget to connect to old friends in our fast paced lives. The busy schedules, the tiring days, the mundane work, take away too much of our lives. But is it worth to forget a friend amidst the busy schedule? Well, check out this poem and it might just make you feel like calling an old friend whom you haven’t talked to for years –

Around the corner I have a friend,
In this great city that has no end;
Yet days go by, and weeks rush on,
And before I know it a year is gone.

And I never see my old friend's face,
For life is a swift and terrible race.
He knows I like him just as well
As in the days when I rang his bell.

And he rang mine but we were younger then,
And now we are busy, tired men:
Tired of playing a foolish game,
Tired of trying to make a name.

"Tomorrow," I say, "I will call on Jim,
Just to show that I'm thinking of him."
But tomorrow comes - and tomorrow goes,
And the distance between us grows and grows.

Around the corner, yet miles away.
"Here's a telegram, Sir", "Jim died today."
And that's what we get, and deserve in the end:
Around the corner, a vanished friend.

-Charles Hanson Towne
