Are you an avid cross stitcher and thoroughly enjoy creating beautiful pieces of long lasting work? Is your house crammed with your various masterpieces such as cushion covers, tablecloths, napkins, coasters and key rings? Looking for something different, enjoyable and challenging to stitch? How about cross stitching some really unusual pieces illustrating various celebration days? No, we don`t mean your great aunt`s cat on her birthday card but something which will be extremely appreciated by the recipient as it will let the lucky friend or relative know of the thought and considerable effort you have put into this particular gift.
Most of us have a sporty member of the family and for those who are extremely keen on the Superbowl and have a favorite team they have supported for ages what a super gift a piece of cross stitch would become for Superbowl Sunday. Hopefully, their team will be at the event, and a cross stitch flag perhaps depicting the team`s logo and the date would be a lovely reminder of a great day, especially if their team wins! Another idea would be to cross stitch the same theme but on a much smaller scale and then sew the completed emblem on to a plain baseball cap in the team`s colors or even attach it to a shirt or jacket pocket. An original keepsake of an important event which could be handed down from father to son.
In the United States Tartan Day is celebrated by people of Scots descent annually on the 6th April. What a lovely gesture to cross stitch an emblem representing this event for a friend or relative who has crossed the pond. How about a pocket emblem of their particular clan`s tartan which they can attach to a shirt or jacket pocket or, if you have time, a banner they could carry during the parade illustrating not only their tartan but anything you know will remind them of Bonnie Scotland. The glorious heather, perhaps a loch, Robbie Burns and of course a bottle of the traditional Scottish whisky. A gift like this would truly remind them you are thinking of them.
Dyngus Day is another celebratory day held annually on the first Monday following the Easter Holiday. It is believed to be of Polish descent and is a day celebrating the end of Lent. Water is poured (not too heavily we hope) by young men and women depicting an ancient Spring tradition of cleaning. Pussy Willow is also used to attract the attention of the opposite sex. A cross stitch picture illustrating Polish dancing couples in traditional costume along with some pussy willow and water jugs being sprinkled gently in the background would be a much appreciated gift for a Polish friend and would eventually become a family heirloom.
Shavuot is a Jewish Festival commemorating the day the 10 commandments were given at Mount Sinai following the exodus from Egypt and it is held seven weeks after the Passover. A masterpiece could be created in cross stitch illustrating not only the tablets with the commandments on them but also the first fruits and the wheat harvest.
Perhaps you have a friend or relative who is extremely interested in the history of some of the great battles which have taken place and a cross stitched picture of a scene from the Battle of Trafalgar, for example, would be greatly appreciated and handed down from one generation to another.
Whichever celebratory day or article you decide to Cross Stitch, do ensure you have sufficient time to complete the task enjoyably as well as checking you have all the necessary bits and bobs that is thread, frame to finish your gift in plenty of time for you to get it to the lucky recipient for their particular celebration. A piece of work you have enjoyed undertaking could eventually become a family heirloom for your friend or relative who will really appreciate the thought, time and effort taken to produce such a gift.
